Dogs drool at sight of different things which trigger their emotions. Dogs drool a lot because they are designed this way. They have mouths that cannot be fixed tightly to pull back the saliva that tries to come out. Dogs often use their tongues to lick back the saliva but how many times they could do it. So saliva is hanging from the sides of mouth. It is quite natural that dogs produce so much saliva because this natural mechanism keeps dogs healthy. The amount of saliva in dogs’ mouth increases at sight of food because naturally dogs need a lot of saliva to lubricate their food and to swallow it easily. Dog owners see dogs that drool a lot as extremely foody dogs. But apart from the natural production of saliva during meal times and during hunger attacks, dogs drool due to a number of reasons. There is no survey regarding what percentage of dogs drool and how much they drool but this is absolutely confirm that all dogs drool. Small dogs drool less usually but again it varies from breed to breed. Large dogs, like Newfoundland, drool a lot. The reason is big muzzle and wide jaws. The shape of mouth plays extremely important role because this is not possible that all dogs have tendency to produce excessive saliva that cannot be controlled and drooling starts happening. Some people these days opt for cheiloplasty for their dogs. It is type of cosmetic surgery that reduces the size of lips, hence making them thinner and closer to each other when mouth is closed. This surgery is usually pursued by those dog owners who have allergies from dog’s saliva and they cannot take any risks of getting sick while coming in contact with saliva. Similarly, there are many dog owners who have issues with slobbing and cleanliness around the house is purpose to achieve.   Whatever the reason is, dog drooling is not something that needs to be controlled by such drastic measures like surgery. Instead of going through all these steps, one could simple choose a dog breed that drools less. A dog with placid and calm nature would also drool less as compared to an extremely hyper active dog. A drooling dog is hard to handle when it is kept inside the house. Somewhat it is better to keep the large dogs in some yard or garden area where the drooling is not creating problem for the furnishings of the house. Dogs also start drooling over their owners’ food during meal times so it is better not to eat in presence of dogs. Although there are hardly any people who would go through all these steps and work to control the drooling of their dogs because once a dog becomes part of family, everything dog does is accepted and loved by the family.
