People who love large dog breeds know how much care and attention these apparently big but child from heart dogs need. Drooling is a problem which often creates mess around the house. Some people find it hard to deal with drooling of dogs but it a natural characteristic and it has its own benefits. Drooling Problems in Large Dog Breeds Usually it is considered normal for dogs to drool. Dogs and their mouths respond really well as soon as they see something to eat. Drooling is a natural process which could not be changed. But not all dogs drool in the same way. When people decide about adopting or having a dog, they look for all sort of behavioral and physical features of available breeds. It is important to decide judiciously because once a dog comes home; it is not a humane thing to send him/her back to some shelter just because there is something about the breed which house members do not like. Large dog breeds usually drool more as compared to smaller ones. There is no explanation behind this theory apart from the fact that larger dogs have such shape of mouth that allows the saliva to overflow after reaching the lips. The shape of mouth plays important role in making a dog regular drooler. The Saint Barnard, Newfoundland, Bull Dog, Bloodhound, Bull Mastiff and Mastiff are few famous names associated with heavy droolers. Why big dogs drool so much and is there anything that could be done to make them drool less? It is often important for people who love big dogs to deal with slobbering and drooling issues because there is nothing else that could be done. Saliva generation is important for dogs to work in the desired way. For example, the bloodhounds are the scent dogs used during hunting. The saliva of these dogs keeps their mouth and nose area wet and it makes their sense of smell as sharp as it is. The dry mouth and nose might lead to lack of olfactory senses. The large dogs have this habit to shake their heads in order to launch their drooling string hanging from their mouths. These droolings missiles later on hit walls, furnishings and the humans around. It is often seen that along with the saliva, large dogs chew other household items as well and launch them later by shaking the heads. Why these dogs do it? Well obviously, the reason is to get rid of the saliva that is flowing heavily from mouths. To avoid such incidences, one must keep on wiping the mouths of their big droolers. Bibs are also used to make the mouth wiping easier. Towels or absorbing clothes should be places over the sofa, beds and carpets where dog likes to take naps. Most of the large dogs act like babies and love to sit in their human’s laps. This makes humans a big target of drooling. It is important to note that large dogs should be given plenty of water every day. They need to stay hydrated, specially after any physical activity. There are chances of these dogs becoming dehydrated and if their mouths suddenly go dry, they should be provided water and a cold place to rest. Another thing that is becoming common this day is genetically designed breeds with “dry mouths” that guarantee that there will be no drooling. Such breeds are usually not standard ones and the dry mouth variation could be problematic because it is somewhat against nature. The breeds with dry mouths should be adopted with proper knowledge that how this variation would be suitable for dog in the long run.
